| Preface
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good
works. (2 Timothy 3:16_17 AV)
BIBLE DOCTRINE FOR THE FAMILY is based on the presuppositions
that the Bible is the very Word of God, God is an absolute sovereign, and
that the Reformed faith is the biblical faith.
The doctrines of the faith are presented in question and answer format
after the style of the confessions of the reformation of the 16th
& 17th century, with the full Scripture references included
in each study. The student may read the questions and answers and consider
the accompanying commentary with the Word of God ever before him so he may
test the truth presented as he goes without need for further works for
reference. Access to the creeds and confessions of the time may assist the
student, but are not mandatory as the essential elements are included
here. In this sense this isn't new material, but a pastoral presentation
of existing materials from the history of the Presbyterian churches as
they directly relate to and present the doctrines of the Bible. The
lessons are centered on the Presbyterian standards as presented by the
Westminster Assembly rather than other Reformed standards.
Each study is intended to be studied for a full week. The method
suggested is to read the question and answer, then the full Scriptures
appended. Next read the commentary and compare the ideas of the
commentator to the Scripture references given. Last for the full week,
each day read the Scriptures for the lesson and pray for God to illuminate
His Word and give you the understanding. Finally decide if you agree with
the answers given and the thoughts of the commentator and write down your
answer, giving the full reason why or why not with support from the Bible
for your own conclusions.
By allowing sufficient time for meditation, prayer and study of each
question, the tenets of the Reformed faith will be added one upon another
until the full biblical doctrine of the Presbyterian churches have been
presented in bite size pieces so all can know and understand the reason
for their faith. "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be
ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of
the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:" (1 Peter 3:15
AV).
The author affirms the continuing gifts of the Holy Spirit as God
actively participates in a progressive providence leading to the
realization of His eternal plan for His own glory. |
